Cliff Lee Traded To Phillies; Crawford Officially “Dangled”

Carl Crawford, Cliff Lee, Scott Kazmir 7 Comments »

Cliff Lee has been traded by the Indians to the Phillies. MLB Trade Rumors has all the details.

Meanwhile, an anonymous GM has confirmed to Jon Heyman what we had been hearing about Carl Crawford. That he is available, or at least was at one point recently.

Tampa Bay will consider anything, and one competing GM swears [the Rays] briefly dangled outfielder Carl Crawford a few weeks ago.

So, no Lee. No Roy Halladay (probably). Without a pitcher coming back to the Rays, it now seems highly unlikely that the Rays will move Scott Kazmir before the end of the year.

Rays Trade Deadline Oddsmakers

Brian Shouse, Reid Brignac, Scott Kazmir, Wade Davis 4 Comments »

hangoverWe are a little more than 48 hours from the trade deadline and for the first time ever, the Rays have been linked with just about every big name available. Of course that will happen when you are in contention and everybody loves your farm system.

So are the Rays buyers? Are they sellers? Are they cross-traders? Let’s take a look at the players that could be dealt and place some odds on a deal being made. One thing to keep in mind, we are still leaning towards nothing major happening. Remember, the next time the Rays acquire a big named player at the deadline will also be the first time…

Brian Shouse/Randy Choate – We are hedging our bets, but this is the deal we see as most likely. The Rays right now have two lefty specialists and they only need one. And this time of year, the only thing more valuable than a lefty relief specialist is a starting pitcher in his prime. Which one is moved? Depends on who is asking, but this should net the Rays a prosepct…90.0%

Scott Kazmir – The Rays want Cliff Lee and they may try to get Lee and Victor Martinez. but adding that salary requires cutting some excess money that is already in-house. Kazmir is tops on that list. But the problem the Rays face is that he is not good enough right now to be attractive to contenders and he makes too much money to be attractive to rebuilding teams. Will somebody bite after seeing his strong start last night? Will Rays still want to move him? The Rays won’t sell cheap. But they might sell medium…49.9%

Reid Brignac – Other teams will ask for Wade Davis. The Rays will offer Reid Brignac. There is some sentiment that the Indians could use a shortstop, but obviously they want the pitcher. But we can also see a situation where Kazmir stays and the Rays give up on Cliff Lee and instead go after bullpen help. Brignac might be the piece to get that done. Right now the odds are a little lower, but keep in mind that the Rays may only deal Kazmir if they know another deal is waiting. If Kazmir goes, this number jumps considerably…33.3%

Wade Davis – This is the guy everybody wants and for the first time, the Rays appear willing to move him. His strong numbers throughout the minors have taken a small step back this season. Not bad, but not great either. And if the Rays are willing to deal, that means there is something they don’t like. Like Brignac, Davis is likely only moved if Kazmir goes first, unless one thinks the Rays would move Davis for Victor Martinez…33.2%

Lance Cormier/Chad Bradford/Joe Nelson/Dan Wheeler – Again, take your pick, but one thing we know is that the Rays are deep in the bullpen and there are options in Durham. If somebody is desperate for relief help and the Rays cannot move one of the lefties, the Rays could easily live without one of these guys in return for a prospect and maybe some cash. And if the Rays feel the chances of making the playoffs are dwindling, this number may be higher…25.0%

Carlos Pena – This one just popped up on the radar yesterday and it makes sense. If the Rays are serious about cutting payroll, they have more options to fill Carl Crawford’s spot, but Pena makes just as much in 2010 and who would you rather keep? Finding a first baseman would certainly be easier than finding a Carl Crawford. Still, if the Rays fancy themselves contenders this season, trading a slugging first baseman would be a bit unusual…3.19%

Carl Crawford – Rays would move CC if given an offer that can’t refuse, but all indications are that a trade is more likely to happen after the season…1.0%

Jeremy Hellickson – Hellboy is the next big thing and unlike Wade Davis, he is still dominating, so there is no reason to think he is any more available than last year when the Rays gave an emphatic “NO” to all who asked…0.5%

Matt Moore/Nick Barnese – This is the next wave of great pitchers in the Rays system and while teams will certainly ask, we have to believe that they are untouchable…0.01%

Hunsicker Turns Down Nationals’ GM Position

Andrew Friedman, Gerry Hunsicker 2 Comments »

Rays Spring Baseball

[Update] Will Carroll adds that Hunsicker did indeed turn down the offer.

Phil Wood of MASN is reporting that the Washington Nationals have contacted Gerry Hunsicker about being their GM in 2010 (thanks Tyler).

I also told them I’d heard that Gerry Hunsicker, Senior VP of baseball Operations for the Tampa Bay Rays had been contacted about the job. They’d heard the same thing…Hunsicker, formerly the GM of the Houston Astros, has been given a lot of credit for the Rays’ rapid transformation from tailender to contender. He’s largely responsible for establishing Tampa Bay’s presence in the international market…There’s no question that Hunsicker’s a sharp executive, but I’ve also heard that he’s occasionally a handful to work with…Haven’t the Nationals already experienced that in a GM?

Mike Rizzo is currently the Nationals’ “acting” GM.

This is not the first time we have heard Hunsicker’s name associated with other jobs.  Last winter it was the Rangers that were said to have interest. Hunsicker, who is “Teller” to Andrew Friedman’s “Penn” (or “Silent Bob” to Friedman’s “Jay” for the younger crowd), is the quiet partner, but by all accounts just as responsible for the product seen on the FieldTurf.

If the Rays do ever lose Hunsicker, it will be a huge loss.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Big Game Scott, Pat’s New Nickname And An Aki Sighting

Time to bring back the GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: “Big Game” Scott. If there is one thing Kazmir has always excelled at, it is rising to the occasion. Yesterday, we ran a poll and more than 80% wanted Kaz traded before next season. And with the season possibly on the line, Kazmir came through with his best start of the year. It was the first time Kazmir pitched into the 8th since June 6, 2008 and only the 5th time since the ’08 all-star break that Kazmir pitched into the 7th…Defense. Several great plays that reminded us a lot of the ’08 Rays.

THE BAD: Pat the ? Pat the Ba? Pat the ummmm? Pat the. What’s the word we’re looking for? Oh yeah. Pat the Rally Killer…Pour Some Out For Our Hommie. Not to get all sentimental, but there is a chance that was the last time we will ever see Scott Kazmir take the mound for the Rays…Irony Defined. Now Kazmir may be more attractive to other teams like the Angels, Rangers and Mets. But the Rays may all of the sudden realize they have a 25-year old lefty with tons of experience and tons of talent.

THE TELLING: Joe Maddon clearly thought this game was important. With 1 runner on, 2 outs and a 4-run lead, JoeMa brought JP Howell in for the final out…We don’t ever complain about payroll, but it is worth noting that the Rays opening day payroll was $63 million. Last night, the Yankees infield payroll (including SP) was $108 million.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: Scott Kazmir. 6 commenters had the correct pick.

  • Joe Smith recaps a great defensive effort by the Rays…Also, Aki Iwamura took groundballs before the game and the Rays are targeting mid-August for a rehab assignment. [St. Pete Times]

Kazmir Back To The Mets? Pena On The Block?

Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Cliff Lee, Scott Kazmir 8 Comments »

Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting (via MLB Trade Rumors) that the Rays have discussed trading Scott Kazmir with both the Rangers and the Mets. Neither move appears to be heading anywhere.

The Rangers turned down an offer to bring Scott Kazmir home to Texas. The Rays have shopped Kazmir around a bit, even calling the MetsNew York Mets , who expressed initial interest but nothing more.

And while it is no surprise that the Rays are trying to move Kazmir to free up salary to acquire Cliff Lee and/or Victor Martinez, the big surprise is that the Rays would also be willing to move Carlos Pena.

Tampa is trying to see if they could trade Kazmir, Carlos Pena and in the right blockbuster even Carl Crawford to free up dollars to make a bigger trade. The Rays are most focused on seeing if they can add Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez in one trade, though they continue to call on Halladay, as well.

Pena is making $8 million this season and is due $10.125 million next year in the last year of his current deal.

MIDDAY TRADE CONFIDENTIAL, JULY 28 [New York Post]

The Daily Poll: Scott Kazmir
