Here is a small update on the Rays interest in ’08 Cy Young winner Cliff Lee…
- Jayson Stark says that Lee is available but that the Indians are not that anxious to trade him. [via MLBTradeRumors]
- Jon Paul Morosi says that the Rays may be trying to get a third team involved in the deal. Morosi adds that the Indians want Wade Davis, but so far the Rays have said “no”.
- In the same link, Morosi says the Rays are also showing interest in Michael Wuertz of the A’s and Jason Frasor from Toronto, but not Rafael Betancourt from Cleveland.
The big question of course is: How does Cliff Lee fit into the rotation?
The short answer is “very nicely.” The long answer is more complicated. The Rays first choice may be to find a taker for Scott Kazmir. If that doesn’t happen, David Price seems like the odd man out. He was likely headed back to the bullpen to conserve his arm at some point, but July may be a little early for that. So then we have to think the best option is to send Price back to Durham and bring him back in September in much the same role he provided last year out of the bullpen.
