Angels May Be Interested In Scott Kazmir

Andrew Friedman, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Scott Kazmir 1 Comment »

If the Rays are going to add either Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee, they most likely would have to also trade Scott Kazmir to free up payroll. Now we are hearing that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim near Disney Land may be interested.

One way the Rays could clear payroll would be to move lefty Scott Kazmir, whom the source said is of “some interest” to the Angels. Tampa Bay has been scouting the Los Angeles system recently, as reported earlier.

The same piece also says Andrew Friedman is “eager to do something.” Whatever that means.

Rays Also Interested In Victor Martinez

[Update] Here is the non-Twitter story. No names have been exchanged, but Cleveland likes the Rays minor league system (who doesn’t?).

[2:30pm] According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, the Rays are also talking to the Indians about catcher Victor Martinez.

Here is a small update on the Rays interest in ’08 Cy Young winner Cliff Lee

  • Jayson Stark says that Lee is available but that the Indians are not that anxious to trade him. [via MLBTradeRumors]
  • Jon Paul Morosi says that the Rays may be trying to get a third team involved in the deal. Morosi adds that the Indians want Wade Davis, but so far the Rays have said “no”.
  • In the same link, Morosi says the Rays are also showing interest in Michael Wuertz of the A’s and Jason Frasor from Toronto, but not Rafael Betancourt from Cleveland.

The big question of course is: How does Cliff Lee fit into the rotation?

The short answer is “very nicely.” The long answer is more complicated. The Rays first choice may be to find a taker for Scott Kazmir. If that doesn’t happen, David Price seems like the odd man out. He was likely headed back to the bullpen to conserve his arm at some point, but July may be a little early for that. So then we have to think the best option is to send Price back to Durham and bring him back in September in much the same role he provided last year out of the bullpen.

Rays Kicking The Tires On Halladay And Lee

Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Wade Davis 7 Comments »

73394596CC025_Toronto_Blue_A week ago we laughed at the notion that the Rays would be players in the Roy Halladay market. This week we still think it is a long-shot, but we are starting to hear some buzz that the Rays have at least inquired as to what Halladay would cost.

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that the Rays have looked at Halladay, Cliff Lee and others but indicates that they would most likely have to trade away one of their big contracts to make a deal.

The Rays are engaged in a whirlwind of activity, investigating Lee, Halladay and numerous other options — “major, major stuff,” according to one source…Payroll flexibility remains a significant obstacle, and the Rays might need to move left-hander Scott Kazmir or another high-priced player to clear room for a major acquisition…There are no indications, however, that the Rays are discussing trades involving Kazmir, who is earning $6 million this season, $8 million in 2010 and $12 million in ’11 with a $13.5 million or $2.5 million buyout for ’12.

Still seems highly unlikely, and maybe Andrew Friedman is just doing his job by making courtesy calls. Keep in mind that in most of these cases, these teams are trying to shed payroll, so the Rays would seem like a not very good fit, if they are unable to add payroll.

Marc Topkin has some quotes from Joe Maddon on the subject.

Manager Joe Maddon would not discuss specifics, but he didn’t say anything to diminish the possibility Friedman was making inquiries…”He’s got some interesting things out there,” Maddon said. “He and I have talked, and we’ve talked about different things. You know him. He’s always got good ideas, and he’s definitely willing to take the plunge if somebody else is…It’s all good stuff. But like most years, nothing ever happens. So we’ll just see. And if nothing happens, I am fine. I’m good with our group.”

Meanwhile, Dave Cameron over at Fangraphs makes a strong case for the Rays trading for Lee.

Call up Mark Shapiro and blow him away with an offer. Stick Lee in front of Shields, Garza, Price/Kazmir, and Niemann and run down the big boys. You have talent coming out of your ears, and a real shot at winning the World Series this year. I know you love Wade Davis, but you can live without him – you have 18 other pitchers who could take his place in future seasons.

So, would Wade Davis be enough? If he is, we will drive Davis to Cleveland. But if the deal is Davis and ?, we need to see what the “and ?” is before screaming for Lee to the Rays.

Keep in mind that the next trade the Rays make sending a top prospect for a veteran, will be their first. There is no track record here except that it hasn’t happened. Will it happen this year? A week ago, we said ‘no way’. But ask us again next week.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Burrell The Good, Gross The Strange And CC The Glove

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Off He Goes. Pat Burrell was 2-4 with a home run. He just missed another later in the game. He just looks different at the plate right now. More confident. He is starting to zone in and we have a feeling he will be a big part of the offense over the next few weeks. Let’s just hope when it starts, it stays for a while…Strangest Tribe. Gabe Gross may be the strangest home run hitter we have ever seen. He doesn’t hit a lot of them, but when he connects they are always no-doubters. Sounds like a Jonny Gomes or a Dave Kingman, right? Except Gross is actually a very good hitter, so with that power, it is amazing he doesn’t hit more longballs…Glove Boat Captain. Carl Crawford has always been very good with the glove. Of course, much of that was just speed. But this season, CC has really stepped up his game defensively. He made a catch last night similar to the one that won him the All-Star game MVP. He has been making those all year and even his arm has been much more accurate this season.

THE BAD: All or None. The relievers won’t be here too often, but they blew chunks all over the mound last night. Both Randy Choate and Dan Wheeler failed to retire a batter as it took 5 different pitchers to get through the 7th inning. And no, we are not going to lay any blame on BJ Upton for misplaying the ball over his head. A ball hit right at a centerfielder on a line is one of the toughest plays in baseball…Fatal. This didn’t cost the Rays last night, but we noticed a glaring weakness with this roster as it is currently constructed. With Dioner Navarro on first base with no outs and down by 1, Joe Maddon did not have a pinch-running option. Willy Aybar, Joe Dillon and Michel Hernandez were on the bench and none are a marked improvement over Navi. Of course, the irony is that the Rays may be one of the fastest teams in history but were stuck with a 5’9″ 250lb catcher on first base who wouldn’t have been able to score on a double.

THE TELLING: Chad Bradford entered the game in the 7th but was pulled with a back injury before facing a batter. Seems awfully convenient that the Rays shakiest relief pitcher of late has an injury with Brian Shouse set to come off the DL tomorrow. Coincidence? Just sayin’…The Rays have scored 3 or 4 runs in 5 straight games.
