The McDLT: Where Hopefully The Hot Stay Hot And The Cool Don’t

If Pat Burrell was a fast food 11 Comments »

WHO'S HOT
WHO'S NOT
Ben ZobristPat Burrell
0 for his last 12. So why is he top billing on the "Hot" side? Because of a well-deserved All-Star selection. Congrats to Zorilla!Pat the Not-As-Skinny-As-He-Used-To-Be-But Who-Is is only 4 for his last 31 (.129)
Carl CrawfordDavid Price
His 13-game hitting streak is not of the cheap variety. He has 7 multi-hit games in that span and is still on pace to be the first to steal 80 in 21 years. In 8 starts, King David has walked at least 5 on 5 occasions, including his last appearance when he was knocked out before the end of the second inning.
JP HowellEvan Longoria
Dude, deserved to be on the All-Star team. Hasn't given up an earned run in his last 18 appearances.Somebody needs to explain to us why BJ Upton is "regressing to the mean" but Evan Longoria is not. Maybe 2 for his last 26 is just "unlucky."
Randy ChoateLance Cormier
This was a toss-up as Dan Wheeler and Grant Balfour have also been great out of the 'pen recently. Slight nod to Choate who has only been charged with an earned run in 2 of his 20 appearances and only once in his last 18.Has allowed 5 runs in his last 3 appearances.

WHO'S HOT 2: The Minors
WHO'S NOT 2: The Minors
Matt MooreCody Cipriano
Only 1 earned run in last 3 starts (19.1 ip) with 26 Ks and 6 walks.0 for his last 11 but he still has a .401 OBP.
Nick BarneseMike McCormick
Has also only allowed 1 earned run in his last 3 starts (18 ip) with 11 Ks and 3 walks.2 for his last 31 (.065) over 10 games.
Reid BrignacTim Beckham
A momentary return of the power he showed in the lower levels with 4 home runs in his last 8 games.Does have 10 hits in his last 10 games (.270) but his strikeouts are back up (11) and the walks are back down (1) over that span. Has also committed 29 errors.

Tracking The 2009 Attendance

Uncategorized 3 Comments »

From time to time we are going to take a look at the 2009 attendance and see how the 2009 season stacks up against last year and whether the Rays can reach their goal of being average (in attendance).

Notes on the attendance follow the graph…

Notes on the 2009 attendance…

  • The Rays drew 1.8 million fans in 2008. That was the most since their inaugural season of 1998 when they drew 2.5 million.
  • The Rays goal for 2009 is league average which was 2.6 million in 2008 (the median was about 2.5 million). However, attendance is down overall in baseball and right now league average projects to be about 2.4 million (red line above) with a median of 2.2 million. The Rays would need to average 29,200 to reach league average and about 26,800 to reach the median.
  • Last year the Rays averaged 22,370 over 81 games. After 33 home games last year they were averaging 19,711.
  • This year the Rays are averaging 23,003, 25th in baseball, and are on pace for 1.86 million, barely more than what they drew last season.

  • The Rays gave $1 million signing bonus to Cesar Perez, a 16-year old 3B from Venezuela. Jon Heyman says “kid can play.”…He is 6′2″, 180 and projects as a power hitter. [Twitter]
  • Want to know why the Rays are so inconsistent and continue to struggle at times? Look no further than the starting pitching. Of the 6 starting pitchers that the Rays have used, only James Shields (4.60) has a tRA less than 5.00. Scott Kazmir (6.22), Andy Sonnanstine (5.99) and David Price (6.93) are all north of 5.50.
  • Not everybody is happy with Joe Maddon’s decision to add Tim Wakefield to the AL All-Star roster…Of course, what is funny about that is that there is a good chance that Maddon passed over his own guy (JP Howell) for Wakefield. [Red Sox Monster]

Notes from Down on the Farm

  • That “Ball-Less Baseball” promotion that we told you about last week, continues to make noise. This time it is in the form of a letter from the team’s home county that suggests the promotion to “allow” only women “likely violates the New York State Human Rights Law”…Please people. Don’t we have better things to worry about. At least wait to see if somebody complains or threatens a lawsuit. Because if some guy does throw a stink about this, then there is a good chance he would have met the original criteria for admittance anyway. [Deadspin]
