Rays, Pedro Discuss Deal?

Pedro Martinez 2 Comments »

The updates on the original post were getting out of hand, so let’s start a new post

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe is reporting (via MLB Trade Rumors) that Pedro Martinez has worked out for both the Rays and the Cubs and that both teams are interested enough to see how much Pedro will cost.

A source close to Pedro Martinez indicated tonight that both the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays have watched Martinez throw in the Dominican and both teams have begun to at least explore how much money it would take to lure Martinez back to the mound.

Cafardo adds that Pedro is reaching 94 mph with his fastball. Last year his fastball averaged 89.4 mph.

Keep in mind that this report is coming from Pedro’s people which would jive with the notion that they are just using the Rays to drum up interest in the veteran.

But again we ask: If there is nothing to this story, then why have the Rays scheduled a second workout?

Rays Interested In Pedro Martinez?

phpKG1Fzi[Update 6:40pm] Marc Lancaster spoke with the Rays and they are downplaying the situation saying it was a “Rays’ officials in the Dominican who has known Pedro for a while” and that he “just watched [Pedro] work out.” Lancaster adds that it sounds like the team doesn’t expect anything to come of it.

That may be true, but then why schedule a second workout? Nothing may come of this, but it sure seems like the Rays are at least exploring the possibility.

[Update 5:40pm] Michael Weber of 10 Connects (WTSP/CBS) in St. Petersburg and Rays Revolutionary reports that they spoke with the Rays and at first the Rays denied the report, but later called back to confirm that a scout did watch Pedro throw.

The #Rays called us back. They say they had one of their Dominican guys watch Pedro.

Strange that they would change their story. The Rays are a very secretive organization, but they are not prone to lying. Either way, it looks like the Rays are at least kicking the tires on Pedro. They will only bite if the price is right, and if the price is right, you can never have too much pitching.

[Update 4:10pm] Here is a second report (in English) that reports that they confirmed the workout with a Rays official.

[1:39pm] We are not familiar with the source, but one news outlet in the Dominican Republic (translated version) is reporting that the Rays have met with Pedro Martinez and even attended a recent bullpen session.

via Google Translate: Even the pitcher held a meeting yesterday [pitching] in the Quisqueya stadium. in the bleachers and was department staff the Rays of Tampa, said the source. In all, Pedro did a bullpen session of 20 pitches, all straight and as the newspaper heard from listeners Rays were satisfied with what they witnessed the veteran pitcher.

From what we can gather from the translation, the Rays will observe another bullpen session in the coming days in which Pedro will mix in his breaking pitches.

Martinez made 20 starts for the Mets last season, going 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA. His last good season was 2005 when he was 15-8 with a 2.82 ERA and 208 strikeouts in 31 starts. He did make two appearances for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. He pitched 6 scoreless innings, striking out 6 and allowing 2 base runners, 1 hit and 1 hit batter.

Prior to the season, it was reported that Pedro was seeking a $5 million, one-year deal. With the season one-third over, we have to assume that the asking price would be in the $2.5-3.5 million range.

It is no secret the Rays have struggled with their starting pitching. The starters have a 4.71 ERA, 9th in the American League. Andy Sonnanstine is the 4th worst starting pitcher in baseball based on VORP (-8.7) and there is no timetable for Scott Kazmir’s return from the DL and whether he will be able to overcome his mechanical issues.

The rotation has been bad. Is Pedro the answer? We have no idea. But if the Rays hope to get back to the playoffs, they need better and more consistent performances from the rotation. And right now, the only way that may be possible is to make a change.

Jon Heyman Is A Hypocrite When It Comes To PED Speculation

Jon Heyman 7 Comments »

phpdWRSa1Yesterday on Twitter, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated wrote the following:

many bloggers are great, but ibanez has a point about unfounded PED speculation. it’s garbage. #phillies

This was in response to one blogger’s efforts to see if there was a statistical basis to disprove the notion that Raul Ibanez of the Phillies is using steroids (here is a link with a full run-down).

So Heyman thinks, like many others, that bloggers should not speculate on the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) without evidence. Certainly Heyman must think the same rules apply to the mainstream media, right?

Wrong.

In June of 2007, Heyman wrote the following for SI.com about whether he will vote for Sammy Sosa to enter the Hall-of-Fame. And let us remind you, that no matter what you think of Sosa, there has never been any evidence linking Sosa to steroids.

Did [Sosa] use steroids when he hit his 66 home runs in the summer of 1998? Is he getting some sort of outside help now that he’s back to being a power hitter for the Texas Rangers? Tough call.

Sure sounds like Heyman is speculating to us. And why is it a “tough call” for Heyman?

Then when Sosa was called upon to speak (before Congress), he struggled to find English words. I know Sosa’s English is better than it seemed that day. But maybe he was nervous. Can I know for sure?

If faking poor English is a sign of steroid use, then half the 2007 Mets roster was juicing. Let’s continue…

No one has ever had the goods on Sosa. No one has ever said he failed a test. Unlike Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield, he never bought from BALCO. I can assume the worst. But I’m not sure that’s fair.

No Jon, it is not fair. And according to your Twitter account, it is “garbage.” Now the big finish…

And unlike McGwire, Sosa has returned to play and thrive after baseball instituted steroid testing. The testing is imperfect, and Sosa is, too. Maybe he’s just as guilty as McGwire. But how am I going to know that for sure? Am I going to be able to count assumption and innuendo against Sosa? Am I going to assume the worst? Tough call.

We don’t know if it is ok for bloggers to speculate on the performance-enhancement of professional athletes. In defense of the blogger writing about Ibanez, he was trying to disprove Ibanez’ usage. But in the end, this is the sports world we live in now. Every athlete is guilty until proven innocent.

And no matter what your view is on this issue, Jon Heyman can’t be a hypocrite. At least the blogger was making a statistical argument. Heyman’s speculation is based on whether or not Sosa can speak English.

There cannot be one set of rules for the mainstream media and another set for bloggers. Garbage is garbage, whether one has media credentials or not.

[Update: Let me say that I am a big fan of Jon Heyman's work. He is a great writer. And he was far from the only mainstream media member to jump on the blogger in question. And I am certain that many of the other writers also have instances in the past in which they have speculated about Sosa or Brady Anderson or Luis Gonzalez or Brett Boone or another player. The intent of this post was simply to point out one blatant example in which a media member is critical of bloggers for something the mainstream media does all the time.]

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss CC’s Arm, BJ’s Legs And Brignac’s Big Swing

BJ Upton, Carl Crawford, Reid Brignac, Willy Aybar 10 Comments »

Angels Rays BaseballTime to bring back the GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: CC’s Throw. We have long been hard on Carl Crawford’s arm, but this season it seem much stronger and more accurate, and last night he threw a runner out at home to end the first. Not only did that stop a run from scoring, but a play like that in the first inning after a 3-game losing streak can be a huge morale booster for a team…Upton’s Steal. We have also been very hard on BJ Upton’s baserunning. But after he got on base with 2 outs in the 2nd, he had to get to second base to get into scoring position, and he did on a steal. He was then driven home on a single. Textbook…Pena’s Blast. Carlos Pena has been slumping recently, but the last couple of nights have shown positive signs as he is using the entire field, none more so than the opposite field home run in the 3rd…Lance Cormier. the bullpen would be in tatters this season if it weren’t for Cormier’s ability to consistently work 2+ innings and hold games in check.

THE BAD: Jeff Niemann. The Giraffe has gotta give the team more than 3.2 innings…A Tale of Two At Bats. In the second inning with no outs and a runner on third, Dioner Navarro got the job done by hitting a ground ball to the right side to bring the runner home. Now with 1 out and another runner on third, Reid Brignac on a 3-2 count, took a home run swing and only hit air. Brignac is a rookie. He will learn. But last night it cost the Rays a run.

THE TELLING: Last Friday’s rainout has finally been rescheduled as a day-night double-header on Labor Day in New York. Why did it take so long? Probably because the Rays weren’t thrilled at the idea of playing the first game of an important 4-game series on the road at 1:00.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: Willy Aybar.
