Tampa Bay Rays Surprise Stat Of The Year

Carl Crawford 11 Comments »

php32003MOver on his blog, Joe Posnanski provided a list of all the Rays offensive league leaders.

Tampa Bay has someone leading the league in hitting (Jason Bartlett), doubles (Evan Longoria), home runs (Carlos Pena), RBIs (Longoria), walks (Pena), stolen bases (Carl Crawford), extra base hits (Longoria), batting average vs. lefties (Akinori Iwamura) and hardest to double up (Carl Crawford) and as a team they lead the league in runs scored. And they are three games under .500.

The only name on that list that surprises us is Carl Crawford leading the league with zero double-plays grounded into. How strange is it? You might be surprised to learn that Crawford, despite his speed and left-handed bat, normally is prodigious when it comes to GIDPs.

In 2007, Crawford stole 50 bases and grounded into 11 double-plays. In the last 20 years only 8 players have stolen at least 50 bases and grounded into more double plays, and only one of those had more than 13. Three times in his career he has grounded into at least 10 double-plays in a season, including 10 last year despite only playing 109 games.

What is different this year? It has to be more than his healthy legs. Certainly he hasn’t had bad hamstrings his entire career.

This is where we are supposed to pull some statistic out of our butt to magically explain why CC has yet to ground into a double-play this season.

First we thought it might be fewer ground balls this season. After all, CC has always had a high ground ball rate (49.6% for his career). Well, this season it is 49.7%. So that is not the answer.

Maybe he has fewer plate appearances with a runner on first base. In 2008 he came to the plate 155 times with runners on 1st, 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd or the bases loaded, or about 1.42 per game. This year it is 1.21 times per game. Less? Yes. But enough to explain the steep decline in GIDPs? Not likely.

In fact, we got nothin’. Maybe Crawford really is in the best shape of his career and maybe at age 27, he is actually a step faster than he was at age 23. Or maybe it is that mythical stat that some use to explain anything out of the norm of statistical reason: Luck*.

Whatever the answer, we are just glad that we have not yet had to watch one of the fastest players in baseball hit into yet another 4-6-3.

*as one person pointed out, this would be improper usage of the “luck” statistic because luck is never a positive stat for the Rays. The Rays are only ever “unlucky.”

So how about this? [Joe Posnanski]

The Tampa Bay Rays Confidence Survey

Confidence graph 3 Comments »

Last week’s Rays Confidence Graph results.

Below you will see two polls that ask about your confidence in the Tampa Bay Rays. We will present these same polls every Tuesday. The results will be presented in graphical form on Thursday, and will be displayed permanently in the sidebar. The goal of the Confidence Graph is to get a feeling of how Rays fans feel about the team and the franchise and track how that level of confidence changes through time.

Raysiverse events of the past week that could impact confidence levels…

  • The Rays are currently 25-28, 5.5 games behind the Yankees in 4th place of the AL East.
  • The 2009 attendance is barely outpacing the 2008 attendance which does not bode well for the future of baseball in St. Pete.
  • It sounds like we will see Reid Brignac play a lot of second base for the rest of the season once Jason Bartlett returns.
  • Andy Sonnanstine is one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball right now.
  • Troy Percival is back with the Rays and may not retire after all. And Scott Kazmir is back to throwing in the bullpen.
  • Wade Davis’ latest start was awful and he barely has more Ks than walks this season.
  • The Rays currently have 9 players on the DL, including Put Burrell who continues to linger on the DL.
  • Aki Iwamura is out for the year, but he hopes to be back with the Rays next season.
  • David Price was as advertised in his last start, picking up his first big league win, but expect a very strict pitch limit moving forward. And Matt Joyce has been promoted back to the Rays.

Time to bring back the GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

No GBT, so instead we present this image of Kevin Stocker. Why? Because it makes us giggle. We like to imagine that Stocker just got hit in the rear with a pitch and it is still stuck there as he tries to pull it out.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • Is Andy Sonnanstine on the clock? Jeff Niemann has been solid his last 3 starts. Sonnanstine has not. So is The Duke, the odd man out when Scott Kazmir returns? Well, according to Kaz, that could be sooner rather than later. Kazmir says his recent bullpen session went great and will have another today. He has also found a “big source” for his mechanical issues. That is significant because every other time he claims to have figured out his mechanical issues, it was apparently just “small” sources *rolling eyes*. [St. Pete Times]
  • Joe Maddon, ever the optimist, still believes Andy Sonnanstine will turn it around noting that he and Jim Hickey have addressed some “items that are kind of interesting.” [Tampa Tribune]
  • Joe Maddon is sticking with BJ Upton at the top of the order. Of course, Maddon has the luxury of knowing the other two options, Jason Bartlett and Aki Iwamura are both on the DL. Maddon also says he might be more willing to change if the Rays were struggling to score runs, when in fact the Rays lead the league in scoring. [Tampa Tribune]
  • Even though the Rays are more likely to plug the second base hole from within, Tom Verducci says that if the Rays do seek help from outside the organization, that they should target Freddy Sanchez of the Pirates. (thanks Amanda) [SI.com]
  • Marc Topkin analyzes the Rays at the one-third pole. [St. Pete Times]
  • MLB Outsider conducted a mock draft with the Rays selecting college pitcher Andrew Oliver. [MLB Outsider]

Down On The Farm: Talbot Misses Start With Possible Arm Injury

Jeremy Hellickson, Mitch Talbot 3 Comments »

Durham 6, Buffalo 4. Chris Mason took Mitch Talbot’s spot in the rotation and allowed 4 runs in 4 innings. He struck out 3 and walked 1…Justin Ruggiano was 0-4 with 2 Ks…John Jaso hit his second home run and was 2-3.

Montgomery 6, Jacksonville 1. Brandon Mann picked up his 4th win after holding Jacksonville to 1 run in 6 innings…Eddie Morlan strike out 3 in 2 scoreless innings…Desmond Jennings was 1-5 with a double and Rhyne Hughes was 2-4 and didn’t strike out.

Charlotte 8. Tampa 2. Alex Cobb struck out 6 in 5 innings, allowing 2 runs in 5 innings…Matt Fields was 2-3 with a double and his 10th home run. He drove in 3…Emeel Salem was 2-5, his 4th multi-hit game in the last 7.

Bowling Green 7, Rome 4. Matt Moore struck out 6 in 4 innings, but was let down by his defense that committed 2 errors that led to 3 unearned runs…Tim Beckham was hitless in 3 at bats but did walk once. He also committed his 14th error.

Notes from Down on the Farm

  • Triangle Offense says Mitch Talbot may have missed his start with shoulder stiffness, but was unable to confirm…Chris Mason, a former starter was promoted a couple of days ago and his numbers in Montgomery hardly seemed worthy of the move. So it appears Mason was promoted to make this start and it looks as though this was a known issue with Talbot’s arm and not something that popped up during warm ups. [Triangle Offense]
