THE GOOD: Blacked Out. not having to watch another anemic performance.

THE BAD: Matt Garza. The Garza Complex comntinues to struggle with his control. 4 more walks yesterday and 10 in his last 2 starts…BJ Upton. Upton had his 3rd straight 0-fer and is now 0 for his last 12 and hitting .171 with no home runs since coming off the DL…Offensive Offense. The Rays are 9th in the AL with 83 runs scored and are 7th with a .787 OPS…Mediocre Pitching. the pitching staff as a whole is 7th in the AL with an opponent OPS of .755. The starters are a little better with a .733 oOPS (4th in AL) but the bullpen’s oOPS is .801 (7th). Last year, the bullpens oOPS was .669.

THE TELLING: Carlos Pena and Aki Iwamura are scheduled to get the day off. Of course. Offense is struggling. Let’s sit the one hitter who is not struggling…The Rays are 7th in the AL with a .771 OPS versus lefties. And they are 5th against righties at .795.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: Aki Iwamura. By default. he had 2 hits and an RBI.

Wonder what the other managers “really think” about Maddons
    decisions on resting players??
I really don’t see them doing anything like it!
Maybe we can help Oakland get out of a slump and win two in a row!
Aki and Pena can go to the beach today…their day off…
thats what I’m doing….of course, I won’t draw their salary!

Yeah, I would say that–nothing good–about sums it up; however, I would also say that the worst aspect of this game, and most games before it, is the offense.

While our pitchers have been struggling, I wonder how much of that is due to the strain put on them by the offense’s lack of runs. Considering that Sonny said something similar to “I feel like I have to pitch a no-hitter” last year, I suspect that the pitching may not be feeling the “love”.

Where is the offense? They seem to light it against bad pitchers, but otherwise silent against all others.

Is it too early to be worried? I dunno, but I’m worried anyway.

Also, is Burrell good for anything? I’m starting to think he should be dropped way down in the lineup.

With BJ still trying to find his stoke, why not go back to having Bartlett and Aki alternating leadoff based on the pitcher? Once he’s had some games under his belt, then have BJ come back to leadoff.

Maybe because it’s early in the season, but the team doesn’t seem to have a sense of urgency when they’re playing, they almost seem too relaxed.
