Two nights ago, BJ Upton, made a sick over the shoulder catch up against the outfield wall (video below). A play so amazing, we still aren’t sure how the ball ended up in his glove. Well, Stuart Sternberg was on hand at The Trop and was holding court with a group of reporters when the play was made. Below is the video of Stu’s reaction to the play.

Clearly this was recorded by one of the reporters. So our question is: Which of the local beat writers actually took the time to upload this to YouTube anonymously? Our money is on Joe Smith of the St. Pete Times. No way that name is real.

And if you haven’t seen the play, or just want to see it like 47 more times, fast forward to #3 of SportsCenter’s top plays. Really? Only #3? We demand a recount.

His catch was the number 1 web gem… that’s something.

  2. I’m guessing it was the guys from Creative Loafing that took that video. Opening day brings out all the media. Hopefully, the Times actually had one of their reporters *watching* the game instead of listening to Stu (I see Shelton in the background). Still, heck of a catch!

I’m happy that the Rays even make it on the top plays now. Back in the day, even if the Rays made great plays, they wouldn’t crack SC’s top ten. I used to get pissed about it, until I thought about them having a water-skiing squirrel as regular on the top ten.

Could you post Stu’s comments after Gardner hit a fly ball over BJs head Tue Night which set up Jeter’s home run…
(which…. if caught would have been the 3rd out!)
Game over!!! Did anyone else see this??
