The news on Fernando Perez is not good. Marc Topkin is reporting that Perez dislocated his wrist diving for a ball two days ago, and he will be out 3 months. Perez says the injury likely occurred because he is using a longer glove this spring.

Perez said he knew instantly he’d be out for a while when his glove caught on the turf while trying to make a diving catch Tuesday – a play he said he usually makes about once a month. Perez said his glove has “never, ever” caught on the turf, but he’s been recently using a longer glove. That 1/4-1/2 inch could have cost him three months.

Funny, we thought a good craftsman never blames his tools.

Perez did try to make light of the situation saying it was his turn to pay the “Web Gem tax.”

“It’s the web gem tax,” Perez said. “Sometimes somebody’s gonna have to pay it. I had to pay it.”

Perez had a very good shot at being the opening day center fielder if BJ Upton was unable to go. Now, Maddon says he will give Gabe Kapler and Ben Zobrist long looks in center and we have to feel that Justin Ruggiano has a good shot to be on the opening day roster.
