Could The Rays Future Home Be The Trop…Without A Roof? [Update]

New Stadium, The Trop 8 Comments »

[Update: 10:00am] Marc Topkin confirms our speculation.

Among other potential improvements, the Rays have asked HOK to look at the possibility of a retractable roof at Tropicana Field, with a report, and cost estimate, due by late April.

[Wednesday] The St. Pete Times has an update on the Rays’ pursuit of a new stadium.

The group that is researching potential sites that could be a new home for the Rays is expected to have something to report on potential sites in June. In other words, in three months we won’t know much more than we do now about a new stadium for the Rays.

The snail’s pace of the group, “A Baseball Community” is not what caught our attention. Rather it was the revelation that another possibility is being explored by the Rays: Staying at The Trop.

The group said it also hopes to address the possibility of renovating the Rays’ current home, Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The Rays hired stadium architect HOK Sport of Kansas City, Mo., to evaluate renovating Tropicana Field. A report could be available next month, Rays senior vice president Michael Kalt said Tuesday.

As many of you may know, HOK is the leading architectural firm in the country when it comes to building stadiums (my dad, a retired architect, worked for HOK for several years).

We have long heard that the site The Trop sits on is a potential home for a new stadium, but this is the first we heard that the Rays are considering a future in The Trop.

While no other details were provided, we have to believe that the only way the Rays would consider remaining in The Trop is if the stadium could be renovated as an open-air stadium or with a retractable roof. We just can’t see a team named after sunlight plaing in a domed stadium any longer than they have to.

Group may have something to report by June [St. Pete Times]

Jason Hammel Has Firm Grip On Final Spot In Rotation

Jason Hammel, Jeff Niemann 6 Comments »

Astros Rays Spring BaseballMarc Lancaster provides us with the starting pitchers for the next five games and the list includes one name competing for the fifth spot in the rotation and does not include any others. The name included is Jason Hammel.

The Rays have provided a list of the upcoming starters:

Wednesday vs. Reds: Hammel (w/ Hernandez)
Thursday vs. Cardinals: Kazmir
Friday at Blue Jays: Garza
Saturday at Orioles: Sonnanstine (w/ Price)
Sunday vs. Yankees: Shields

Lancaster speculates on what this means for the starting rotation…

What should we glean from that setup, given that the Rays have said they’re close to narrowing the field of rotation candidates? Well, considering Jeff Niemann isn’t specifically listed, perhaps that’s an indication he may be more in line for a bullpen job, with Hammel set up for the rotation. That would be an interesting move, as I’d say Niemann has been the best of those competing for the fifth spot to this point. But perhaps I’m reading too much into it. Guess we’ll see.

We won’t go so far as to say that Hammel has already won the final spot in the rotation, even though the writing has been on the wall for a while. It is very much the Rays M.O. to wait to make decisions until they absolutely must be made. But this does suggest that Hammel has a firm grip on the final spot in the rotation and it would take an absolute nose-dive from Hammel and signs that Jeff Niemann is the next Nolan Ryan for somebody other than Hammel to be in the rotation when the Rays break camp.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss A Rotation In Mid-Season Form, The Debut Of Izzy And Upton Giving The Batting Machines A Day Off

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

Phillies Rays Spring BaseballTime to bring back the GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Programming Note: If you have any interest in reading the GBTs from Thursday, Friday and Saturday, they can be found below the Webtopia, after the jump.

THE GOOD: Matt Garza. Garza is the latest of the Rays starters to have a solid spring start, as he took his turn putting up zeros. He pitched 4 scoreless innings, striking out 2 and giving up 3 hits and a walk…Troy Percival. Percy looks like he is going to be the closer on opening day as he again pitched a perfect 5th inning…Jason Isringhausen. Izzy made his first appearance in a Rays uniform. He did give up a lead off triple and that runner would eventually score, but that was his only blemish in 1 inning of work…Tim Beckham. Becks came in midway to play short, and collected a double and 2 RBI.

THE BAD: Joe Nelson and Dan Wheeler. Two guys that figure to have spots in the bullpen gave up a combined 6 runs in 1.2 innings including 5 hits, 3 of which were home runs…Morgan Ensberg. Ensberg, who needs to prove to the Rays that he can be a solid defensive contributor at several positions, committed his second spring error…Elliot Johnson is second on the Rays in total bases this spring, with 2 doubles and 3 home runs. However he also leads the Rays with 10 Ks to only 2 walks.

THE TELLING: The rotation is in mid-season form despite a late start. If Jason Hammel is the presumed 5th starter (more on that later today), the 5 starting pitchers have thrown a combined 31 innings this spring and allowed 10 runs (2.90 ERA) on 29 hits. They also have 23 strikeouts to only 4 walks. Not bad. Not bad at all…Extra innings gave Joe Maddon a chance to see a lot of pitchers as 9 different guys took the mound for the Rays…Justin Ruggiano got the start in right field with Gabe Kapler starting in center. Elliot Johnson relieved Kapler late in the game.

Tampa’s front four of Matt Garza, Andy Sonnanstine, James Shields and Scott Kazmir is a given strength, with Garza and Kazmir capable of jumping from a combined 23 wins to over 30. The Rays are so confident about their rotation that Joe Maddon is contemplating whether or not to allow David Price to build early-season momentum in the minors, so that when he comes up in the first month he will have been on a set schedule and built confidence; remember, Price has one year of professional service. A lot depends on whether Jeff Niemann, Carlos Hernandez, Jason Hammel or someone else can give them 3-5 starts. But while Price may open the season in Durham, he and Wade Davis are going to be important to the rotation by the time the pennant race is in gear.

  • Couple of good tidbits from Marc Topkin…If BJ Upton is not ready on opening day, Joe Maddon is considering a start to the season with a platoon in both center and right field.
