[HOT STOVE] Orvella Dropped From 40-Man; Rays Preparing For A Move?

To remove Orvella from the roster is not a surprise as he was the lowest ranked member of the 40-man roster in the most recent “Trade Value Index“. However, the timing of the move is curious as there was already an open slot on the 40-man roster. To make the move now, could be an indication that the Rays are preparing to make additions to the roster in the next few days through free agency or a trade.
This move leaves the Rays with 38 players on the roster.
Orvella did not play in 2008 after suffering a shoulder injury in the spring. He made 69 appearances for the Rays in three seasons from 2005-2007.

As I responded to the same comment on DRB, this doesn’t seem likely as the Rays are picking towards the end of the Rule 5 and are not likely to get any players, much less two since they already had an open slot.
Too bad for Orvella, had Mike Butcher never came around and mess with the kids mechanics, and speeding up his delivery to the plate, maybe he could have been useful… Oh well, One less member of the ’07 Blowpen….
very true. I guess the Rays could trade with a team in the first couple of slots if they have their eye on somebody in particular. but like you said, not likely to get two players.
maybe they want 1 player in rule 5 and a free agent before December 11?
Whether it is a trade, free agent or rule 5 or some combination of the 3, it seems like there must be a motive for making the move now. maybe not. just a hunch.
