[THE HANGOVER] The Rays Finally Catch A Couple Of Breaks

Attendance, Dioner Navarro, Evan Longoria, Justin Ruggiano, Matt Silverman, Pedro Alvarez, Scott Boras 1 Comment »

THE GOOD: Finally, the Rays caught a couple of breaks. First was in the second inning after Matt Garza gave up a leadoff single. With the runner going on the pitch to stay out of a double-play, Lyle Overbay then hit a bouncer back up the middle that looked like a catcher trying to throw out a basestealer. The ball bounced chest-high right over the second base bag, right to a waiting Jason Bartlett, who caught it and threw to first for the double-play. Then in the 7th, after retiring the first 2 batters, Garza gave up back-to-back singles, the second of which went under the glove of Willy Aybar, essentially giving the Jays an extra out in the inning. Garza survived to get the next batter to pop out. Finally, in the 9th inning, with a 1-0 lead Joe Maddon brought in Dan Wheeler and looking like a genius, Papa Joe moves Justin Ruggiano from right to left field. With 2 outs, Rod Barajas hit a ball that if a foot farther is a home run. As it was, Ruggiano timed his jump perfectly and his glove and the ball reach the top of the fence at the same moment, and somehow the ball stuck in Ruggiano’s glove. Game over…We’ve been saying it for a while, but if there was any doubt, there shouldn’t be now. The Yankees are dead. The Yankees are roadkill.

THE BAD: Holes in the Rays’ bats. The 11 strikeouts isn’t terible. But when 9 of them come in the first 4 innings, that is terrible. It is hard to tell, how much of it was the Rays having a bad night or how much was just David Purcey pitching light’s out. He threw a complete game needing only 90 pitches. 72 of those pitches were strikes. A truly Madduxian performance. Just gotta tip the cap and be grateful for Carlos Pena’s latest home run, or else they might still be playing.

THE TELLING: The Rays magic number for the Wild Card is 25 over the Twins, with 31 games remaining.

DEVIL RAYS WEBTOPIA

  • Dioner Navarro had an MRI done on both of his hamstrings and no damage was detected. He is listed as day-to-day. [Rays Report]
  • Evan Longoria hit off a tee and Joe Maddon said everything went well. [The Heater]
  • We have been trying to defend the attendance for a while now. But after this week, we don’t know what to say anymore. John Romano is right: “And, in a remarkable display of grace under pressure, we continue to stay away from Tropicana Field in droves.” Matt Silverman has a couple of quotes that reveal the frustration of the team. [St. Pete Times]

“The TV ratings are high, and that’s a great sign, but it hasn’t translated to the number of people at Tropicana Field. It really takes the wind out of our sails,” Silverman said. “We’ve poured our hearts and souls into making this a great draw, and a great fan experience. And to come home after a great road trip and have … the smallest crowds in major-league baseball was discouraging.

  • Baseball Mastermind takes a look back at their preseason preview of the Rays to see what they got right…As a side-note, we have a few friends that got the Rays over-under for wins prior to the season at 77. They laughed at how “high” it was, bet the under, calling it the best line they had ever seen. Like a broken record, they all chimed in, “I don’t care how improved the Rays are, they will never win 78 games when they have to play the Red Sox and Yankees 18 or 19 times each.” We warned them that it was not as impossible as they thought. Does anybody listen to us? Suckers. [Baseball Mastermind]
  • This should put to rest any lingering thoughts that the Rays should have drafted Pedro Alvarez with the top pick in June. Turns out Scott Boras refused to do any negotiating until just hours before the deadline and when Alvarez finally stepped up and pushed the negotiations just before the midnight deadline, a deal got done. Only, now Boras and Alvarez are contesting the deal, saying it was not submitted in time and of course they want more money. In other words, Alvarez and Boras are not happy that Buster Posey got more money. [MLB]

[DOWN ON THE FARM] Dan Johnson’s 25th Home Run Not Enough For Bulls

Lowell 5, Hudson Valley 3. Tim Beckham was to report yesterday, but did not play for the ‘Gades last night.

[GHOST OF SHAWN CAMP] Rays Bullpen No Longer Giving Free Passes To Inherited Runners

The Bullpen doesn't suck? 2 Comments »

In today’s stat-driven world there are any of a thousand ways to evaluate a player or team. But for all the Sabermetrics, maybe the most important stat for a relief pitcher is still the number of inherited runners they allow to score. Baseball is still about scoring runs and preventing runs and the toughest run for a pitcher to prevent is the one that is already on base.

Last year the Rays were the worst team in baseball at preventing inherited base runners from scoring. As a team they ranked last, allowing 41.8% (114 of 273) of inherited runners to score.

We all know the bullpen is improved in 2008, but by how much? Let’s take a look at this season’s numbers compared to last year.

From worst to first in preventing inherited runners from scoring and from worst to first in the standings.

Now let’s take a look at the individual contributors over the past two seasons…

Of the 5 pitchers that faced at least 20 inherited runners last season, only 1(!) allowed fewer than 40% of the inherited runners to score. This season, all 4 of the pitchers that have faced at least 20 inherited runners are below 20%.

It seems impossible that a team could improve their bullpen this drastically in one season. We are not talking about one or two pieces. We are talking about seven new pieces and all of them being better than any of the pieces in the bullpen last season.

Oh, Shawn Bleepin’ Camp…How we haven’t missed you.

[TAMPA BAY RAYS MEDIA] Media Approval Ratings: Results

Andy Freed, Dave Wills, Dwayne Staats, Joe Magrane, John Romano, Marc Lancaster, Marc Topkin, Martin Fennelly, Media Approval Ratings, Todd Kalas 8 Comments »

We still have several of these to go through, but thought we would show how the various Rays media members are faring so far…

In general, Rays fans are happy with the on-air media with all scoring above 90%. As for the print media, the fans are more supportive of the writers from the St. Pete Times. Could this be an anti-Tampa Tribune bias? Or maybe this is a reflection of the Yankees love-fest that regularly occurs at the Tribune?

[THE HANGOVER] Rays Drop Second Straight; Magic Number For Wild Card Now 26

Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Dioner Navarro, Evan Longoria, John Jaso, Manny Ramirez, Mike DiFelice, Steve Henderson, Troy Percival No Comments »

THE GOOD: After all that has happened in the past 3 days the Rays still lead the Red Sox by 4 games in the loss column with the hapless O’s coming to town next and the Red Sox still have 2 more games in Yankee Stadium and then have to face the White Sox…And thanks to 4 straight losses by the Twins, the Rays magic number to clinch at least a wild card spot is now 26 with a 7-game lead over Minnesota in the loss column.

THE BAD: For a few fleeting moments on Sunday it looked like the Rays had a very good chance to stretch their lead on Boston to 6.5 games. A dropped-throw from the outfield, a horrific call by an umpire, Roy Halladay, an extra-inning win by Boston and a blowout of the Yankees later, the Rays lead is down to 3.5.

THE TELLING: We are suddenly reminded why football is so much more painful than baseball. If the Bucs have a bad loss: a) that game represents 1/16th of their season and; b) we have to wait an entire week with that loss and all the missed plays swirling in our head. A bad Bucs loss messes us up for an entire week. A bad Rays loss and there is hope for redemption the next day.

DEVIL RAYS WEBTOPIA

  • Dioner Navarro took himself out of last night’s game in the 6th inning with cramps in both hamstrings. He is calling it a “day-to-day thing”…If he is shelved for more than a day or two, the Rays will need to call up a catcher. The first choice would have to be Mike DiFelice, but somebody would need to be removed from the 40-man roster. John Jaso is already on the 40-man and is hitting well at Durham, but the consensus seems to be that he is not ready to catch at the major league level. [The Heater]
  • Evan Longoria had x-rays on his broken wrist and everything looked good. Longoria is still aiming for a Sept. 1 return from the DL…The plan is for Longoria to start taking batting practice later this week. [MLB]
  • Brittany Ghiroli reports Troy Percival threw about 30 pitches from a mound yesterday and expects to be activated on Saturday. [MLB]
  • Instant Replay will be in place for Friday’s home game against the Orioles. Replay will only be used to determine whether home runs cleared a fence or whether it was fair or foul. [The Heater]
  • Buster Olney says Carlos Pena got his best hitting advice from Manny Ramirez and Steve Henderson reminded Pena when Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford were injured to just “see the ball” and not try to over think things as a hitter. [ESPN]
  • Marc Topkin has his list of “5 things to watch in Rays’ stretch run.” One great point he brings up is facing the Yankees. Our instincts tell us to fear the Yankees, but if they continue to fall off the pace, will their veteran players be motivated to play hard? [St. Pete Times]

[THE RAYSHEAD ARMY] A Seven Nation Army Can’t Hold The Rays Back

Uncategorized 12 Comments »

As the pennant race heats up, it is time for the Tampa Bay Rays to announce their presence with authority. The Rays need an anthem, and there is no more perfect anthem than “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes.

The song is already popular at many European soccer events. Watch the following video and imagine how intimidating the Trop would be with 36,000 fans chanting in unison inside an enclosed dome…

This song also works perfectly with the Rays goal to broaden the appeal of the team outside of the Tampa/St. Pete area. Each of the Seven “Armies” can be representative of different counties/cities that compose the majority of the Rays fan base. There is even a marketing angle here that should entice the team, selling T-shirts and other items identifying which “Army” a fan is a member of.

C’mon Stu, you can make this happen.

[RI CONFIDENCE GRAPH] The Tampa Bay Rays Confidence Survey

Confidence graph No Comments »

Last week’s Rays Confidence Graph results.

Below you will see two polls that ask about your confidence in the Tampa Bay Rays. Please take a moment to answer each question. We will present these same polls every Monday. The results will be presented in graphical form on Wednesday, and will be displayed permanently in the sidebar. The goal of the Confidence Graph is to get a feeling of how Rays fans feel about the team and the franchise and track how that level of confidence changes through time. Thanks!

Raysiverse events of the past week that could impact confidence levels…

  • The Rays are 79-50, 4.5 games up in the AL East over the Red Sox and 9.5 games ahead of the Yankees…In the past week the Rays went 4-2, winning 2 of 3 at home against the first-place Angels and 2 of 3 on the road against the first-place White Sox.
  • The Rays are 12-4 in Evan Longoria’s absence.
  • The Rays were at the colon-end of two of the most atrocious calls one will ever see on a baseball field. It pains us to say this, but the Rays were Lucky to only lose one of those games.
  • Dan Johnson keeps adding new positions to his repertoire hoping to increase his value for a potential call-up.
  • David Price’s workload is being limited in triple-A. Does this foretell a September call-up?
  • Joe Maddon will no longer keep a strict pitch-count on Scott Kazmir with the hope of easing the young hurler’s mind while toeing the rubber.
  • David Price is one of 5 finalists for Minor League Player of the Year.
  • Joe Maddon may already have AL Manager of the Year locked up.

[DOUG EDDINGS] Rays Have Now Officially "Joined The Club"

We found the above image at the website, DougEddingsIsADouche.com. It is not quite FireJoeMorgan.com, and the site is actually defunct, but for a league where not many umpires’ names are even known, it can’t be easy to have a hate-site in your name.

This is what happens when the Rays have an off-day after a bad loss…
