NOTES FROM DOWN ON THE FARM…

…a big breakout year for him, so he’s a good guy to cover. Very impressive command, approach, and composure, all those little things the scouts love that tend to project favorably. The stuff was also impressive on one look despite a smallish frame, with a 91-93 mph fastball, flashing an above-average to plus breaking ball and good feel for a change that flashed above-average. He’s the real deal and I’m glad I’m seeing him now since he shouldn’t be in the FSL very long.

I was at that game in Tampa and thought Hellickson looked even worse than his line indicates. Lots of screaming line drives and deep flies to the warning track. The 2 home runs were no-doubters. And even when he did go to 0-2 or 1-2 he couldn’t put hitters away, often going to 3-2 and then giving up a hit or hard hit ball.

Tiffany looked great in his first inning. Pinpoint control and unhittable pitches. And despite the 3 walks and one solid line drive hit, my impression was positive. He got an awful lot of swings and misses-and some bad swings-at what I thought was a mixture of solid fastballs and excellent curves.

By the way, the paper says 723 attended. I doubt there were 200.
