Torre has to feel absolutely helpless right now. He can’t get more than five of six innings out of any of his starters — Pettitte lasted just 4 and 2/3 last night — and there is no one he can trust in the bullpen. Even Mariano Rivera has shown his vulnerabilities early on, failing to record a single save this year and carrying a 12.15 ERA over 6.2 innings into today’s game. The answers seem so simple, but every game just brings more questions for a club in disarray.
